My Story

This is why we fundraise for The Stars Appeal:

Lynne's Story

This will be my 4th Trek in support of the Stars Appeal to say thank you to Salisbury Hospital.

They saved the life of my niece Alice born several weeks premature in 2001 and looked after my darling Dad before his terminal cancer diagnosis, as well as regularly looking after me in the Eye Clinic following finding out I have glaucoma in one eye . I first trekked in  2019, along the Great Wall of China and next across the desert in Jordan to Petra in 2022. In April 2024  it was through the Colombian Rainforest to the Lost City and this time another thanks was added to my list - a thank you for saving the life of my amazing friend and trekking buddy Colin.

In July 2024, my husband Gary suffered profound and permanent hearing loss caused by a rare condition called Labyrinthitis Ossificans. The ENT Audiology Team at Salisbury Hospital, having diagnosed his condition, urgently referred him to a specialist and just a few weeks later he received a cochlear implant which we hope will enable him to hear again. This time, ahead of the Dalai Lama Trek I will be fundraising to support the Stars Appeal fund 6 high-definition videoscopes for the ENT Department which will provide a new ‘one-stop’ diagnostic service for head and neck cancer patients.

Colin's Story

In April 2011 I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. I was 50 years old. Surgeons acted quickly to remove my prostate and all was well. Five years on, In April 2016, I attended Salisbury Hospital for a minor procedure, during which it was discovered that I had a cancerous tumor in my left ureter, the tube that goes from the kidneys to the bladder. Once again the surgeon acted quickly to remove the ureter containing the cancer, together with my left kidney and a small part of my bladder where the tube had connected to it and again, all went well. Six months later I was invited for a routine Colonoscopy. After the procedure there was a delay in letting me go home and a nurse asked me if my wife was still in the hospital as the surgeon wanted to see us before we left. We were led into his office where he told us that he had found a bowel cancer. Another major surgery to remove the cancer and a severe reaction to the chemotherapy that followed, resulted in almost a month in the hospital's Pembroke Ward cancer department. All my surgeries and my ongoing checkups have been and are carried out at Salisbury District Hospital.

In 2022 I trekked 110 kms through the Jordanian desert from Dana to Petra to raise vital funds for Salisbury Hospital Charity The Stars Appeal. It was having signed up for the trek that I met my now amazing friend and trekker Lynne. We teamed up as 'Team C.O.L.L.Y.N' to fundraise as much as we can for our incredible hospital charity.

In 2024 we trekked with another 34 people through the Colombian rainforest to the Lost City.

We have done it again and signed up for the Dalai Lama Mountain trek in Northern India in April 2026 where we'll be walking at altitude (up to 3200m) for up to 9 hours a day, through pastures, paths and passes in the southernmost ridges of the Himalayas. We will be funding the total cost of the trek ourselves which means every penny you donate goes directly to The Stars Appeal.

To date, by taking part in these treks, Colin and Lynne have raised £38,000 for the charity, so this time and with your help we aim to take that total through the £50,000 barrier.

Thank you.
